Let Me Introduce Myself



  Michael Bennet-Senior Senator-Denver, CO



Born: November 28th, 1964

Age: 50

Education: Michael Bennet graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in history and attained his law degree from Yale Law School. During his time at Yale, he was the editor-in-chief for the Yale Law Journal. 

 Early Life: Michael was born in New Delhi, India, as his father was a U.S. Ambassador. Michael then grew up in Washington, D.C. where his father was an aid to VP Hubert Humphrey. Bennet struggles with dyslexia and was held back in the second grade. Despite all this he served as a page on Capitol Hill and later as a Coro Foundation fellow in New York City.

Before the U.S. Senate: Bennet has worked as an aide to Ohio Governor Richard Celeste, a law clerk for the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, and has served as Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General during the Clinton Administration. He then entered into the business world briefly before returning to public service. On January 27, 2005, Bennet was appointed superintendent of Denver Public Schools and was also considered for the role of United States Secretary of Education under the Obama Administration. 

Senate: Michael Bennet was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Ken Salazar on January 3, 2009. He ran for election in 2010 where he beat Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff in the primaries and later Republican candidate Ken Buck.He is currently serving a full six-year term that started in January of 2011.  

Family/Personal Life: Married October 26, 1997 to Susan Diane Daggett in Marianna, Arkansas. They have three daughters and reside in Denver's Congress Park. 

Religion: Michael Bennet has Jewish roots but says he was raised with two different heritages, one Jewish and one Christian. Bennet says he believes in God.  


Fun Facts: 
  • Bennet's campaign versus Romanoff for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2010 election became one of the most expensive in the country. The candidates reportedly spend $15 million combined with outside groups contributing another $30 million. Michael Bennet has been in Washington, D.C. since January of 2011 where he will serve a full six-year term. 
  • Bennet was a member of Beta Theta Pi at Wesleyan University.                                 
  • Bennett's maternal grandparents were Polish Jews who survived imprisonment in the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. His mother is a retired school librarian who teaches English as a second language and is an art historian specializing in Roman antiquities. 
  • Bennet attended St. Albans School, an all-boys prep school.
